The key responsibilities will be to: 

  • Assist in the promotion, direction and oversight of high standards of teaching and learning, pupil achievement and progression through effective inclusion for pupils with special educational needs. 
  • Liaise with Local Authority SEN officers in relation to Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCPs) 
  • Chair/oversee Annual Review meetings of EHCPs. 
  • Liaise with visiting therapists and/or assessors. 
  • Be consistent in the delivery of all the school policies and practices 
  • Keeping all paperwork including records and policies, up to date and actioned, as appropriate. 
  • Meet with parents to support SEN, including advising on EHCP process. 
  • To monitor the quality of SEN support delivered both by teachers and teaching assistants. 
  • To ensure that awareness of SEND issues is maintained across all teaching staff. 
  • To maintain a thorough and up to date knowledge and understanding of the current SEND Code of Practice and of the school’s curriculum and policies. 
  • To participate in INSET provided by the school and where appropriate to lead INSET on SEND issues. 
  • Oversee the KS2/3/4 Assistant SENDCos and SEND Administrator 
  • Oversee the Therapy Team (OT, SLT Play Therapists etc) and the inclusive therapy provision 
  • Contribute as part of the Admissions team responding directly with the Registrar and with the different local authorities who apply to place children at The Unicorn.

Due to stable growth our small and friendly team at The Unicorn School are looking to recruit a Teacher of Maths to join the team on a full time, permanent basis and to teach our students in KS3-KS4. You will be adept at coaching our students to see and lead them through challenges in their learning, so they make the best possible progress in each and every lesson.  For the right candidate the position of Head of Maths may be available.

 You will:  

  • Have Qualified Teacher Status and a degree or a similar Maths related qualification  
  • Possess recent experience of teaching Maths to students in KS3-KS4 
  • Have a good knowledge of the National Curriculum for GCSE Maths including exam specifications.  
  • Possess a good understanding of SEND procedures 
  • Have a diverse set of skills which will enable you to be flexible, working in the classroom for both theory and practical sessions, as well as in our modern learning centre 
  • Be an innovative and reflective practitioner who is keen to learn 
  • Understand how to adapt your teaching for neuro-diverse pupils 
  • Respect and promote the school’s ethos and values 
  • Have strong ICT skills

We have a vacancy for a skilled and experienced Speech and Language Therapist to join our dedicated and supportive inter-disciplinary team, who support the best outcomes for the students through holistic and integrated programmes. You will work alongside another Speech and language Therapist in addition to a Speech and Language Therapy assistant and school staff implementing 1:1 and group SLT input. You will provide a range of intervention including individual and group therapy sessions, support and train parents and staff along with universal level provision. You will be offered relevant training, support and supervision. The main focus of the role will be to assess and support the students holistic communication needs, facilitating in promoting the learning and personal development of the pupils, ensuring they make best use of the educational opportunities available to them.

The main duties will be:

  • Ensure all pupils are safe in our care and that safeguarding procedures are followed at all times
  • Assessment of a range of communication difficulties
  • Use of standardised and non-standardised assessments  (clinical observations)
  • Report writing for annual reviews, outside agencies and EHCP applications.
  • Implementation of therapy sessions on the basis of assessments and EHCP specifications where appropriate
  • Provision of therapy programmes for school and home use
  • Organisation of small group therapy sessions
  • Collaboration with student, Parents, Teaching staff, Occupational Therapist and Creative Arts and Play Therapist and voluntary organisations where appropriate.
  • Monitoring and reviewing of interventions
  • Contributions to IEPs
  • Meetings with parents
  • Attendance at SEN Team meetings
  • Establish constructive relationships with pupils and interact with them according to individual needs
  • Promote the inclusion and acceptance of all pupils
  • Promote self-esteem and independence in all students
  • Provide feedback to pupils, teaching staff and parents in relation to progress and achievement
  • Contribute to the maintenance of a purposeful, orderly and supportive environment.
  • Promote good pupil behaviour, dealing promptly with conflict and incidents in line with established policy and encourage pupils to take responsibility for their own behaviour
