UNICORNS ON THE RUN

The Unicorn School, Abingdon which supports children with neurodiversity has been selected as one of the charity partners for this year’s Blenheim Palace 7km Run on Sunday 21 May

The Unicorn School, Abingdon which supports children with neurodiversity has been selected as one of the charity partners for this year’s Blenheim Palace 7km Run on Sunday 21 May.

World Heritage site Blenheim Palace in Woodstock, Oxfordshire is the magical location for this family-friendly fun run with a beautiful lakeside off-road section.

Mr Day, Head Teacher at The Unicorn School, is leading the charge along with a number of staff and governors. Mr Day said “I am not a runner, but I have decided to take on this challenge in order to raise much-needed funding for the school. We are currently running at full capacity with over 250 applications a year for 20 spaces. All funds raised will go towards expanding the school, helping us to support more children with learning challenges.”

The 7km route is a challenge for experienced runners but as a family-friendly event, there is also a 4 mile route for buggies and wheelchairs, and a 1 mile route for under 15s. If they are feeling brave, runners can also bring along their canine best friend.

Mr Day will be joined by a number of parents and students who have also chosen to run in support of the school. Olivia Johnson, a parent at the Unicorn School, will be running with her son Marley. Olivia said, “Marley and I are running to raise money for the Unicorn School because it is a wonderful, unique school that supports children like Marley who are dyslexic and would seriously struggle in a mainstream school. The staff at the Unicorn are brilliant at finding and drawing out the children’s skills and talents, and enabling the children to believe in themselves as learners. We are so grateful to all the staff at The Unicorn for being open-minded, kind and imaginative. You are forming the future of our children every day, and we are thankful for all that you do.”

The Unicorn School supports children aged between 8-16 with various forms of neurodiversity including, dyslexia, autism, dyspraxia and associated learning difficulties. The school has been running for 31 years and has 108 pupils supported by 55 members of staff.
