The best word to describe the Under 11 boys first football match of the year has to be, WOW! On Wednesday this week our Under 11 boys faced Abingdon Prep in some very challenging conditions.
It was cold and windy but the team quickly got warmed up with some dynamic stretches and passing practise. The starting 9 were cheered on by the boys on the bench, friends and family as we kicked off. A strong start from Unicorn saw Joseph set up Austin who’s strike from range, smash off the post as we quickly gained control of the tie. Robin, Louie and Frankie in defence cut out any attack that Abingdon mounted as we looked for the first goal. 8 minutes into the first 20 minute half, Jacob found some room on the right wing and unleashed a shot which managed to squirm it’s way past the Abingdon goal keeper and give Unicorn the lead. Met with loud cheers from the Unicorn supports the boys went on looking for more. Goals from striker Jesse and captain midfielder Austin quickly saw us gain a 3-0 lead approaching half time. Some fresh legs were introduced as Finn, Jack, Thom and Robert came onto the field. A great long range strike from Austin made it 4-0 to Unicorn as the half time whistle went.
Sam in goal for the first half wasn’t very busy so got subbed outfield as Edward went in goal for the second half. The second half started as the first finished with Jesse getting his second goal of the match. Some tricky play for Orlando on the left wing set up Frankie in on goal who buried his strike to make it 6. The boys didn’t stop there and kept the pressure on. Jesse with some great footwork on the right got to the by-line and cut it back to Jack who stuck his first time strike past the keeper and made it 7. Jacob quickly got his second of the game with another great strike which was followed by defender Louie capped off a great game by getting the final goal of the game before swapping with Edward for a shift in goal. A resounding 9-0 win for The Unicorn was followed by tea and biscuits from the home team.
Thank you to everyone who came to support and picked the boys up at different times.
