Andrew Day and his wife, Helen

“It was with much humility that I went to Windsor Castle on Tuesday, April 23rd for my Investiture. We were alongside a host of fantastic people who were being honoured for their contribution to a whole array of subjects from Music to Sport, Education and their impact on their local community. It was an honour to spend time with these individuals and their families while we waited for the Investiture.

The Princess Royal, Princess Anne, was incredibly well informed and asked me about The Unicorn School and about our students. I talked with great pride about the school, what we do here and how we are able to support the fantastic children who attend.

It is a huge honour to be awarded the MBE for services to education. I have no doubt that it is due to the incredible work that takes place at the school and the transformative impact we have on our students and their families. This is down to all 67 members of staff at the school, the 120 children who we care deeply for and the parents and carers who have had to fight so hard to place their children at the school. I secretly wore my unicorn socks to the castle so that the whole school could feel that they were there with me.

It was a magical day spending time in the King’s dining room, The Queen’s drawing room as well as a host of other rooms festooned with magnificent artwork and antiquities from around the world. It was made even more special by my being able to spend the day with my wife, Helen, and my two daughters, Megan and Hannah. It is a day we will all remember for an awfully long time.”
