Thanks so much to Sarah Hunt, Year 8 Form Tutor, who, along with 20 other runners will be taking part in the Blenheim 7k Fun Run to raise funds for The Unicorn School this weekend. Sarah told us why she was taking part earlier this week:
“I’m not a runner – yet here comes my fourth Blenheim 7K!
I’m not a runner, or at least, that’s how I see myself. And yet, here I am, about to lace up for my fourth Blenheim 7K Fun Run, training that has pretty much matched that same timeline and just enough to get me across the finish line!
What started as a casual challenge has turned into a goal, an incentive, and a reason to keep moving. I’ve been training alongside my friend and colleague from The Unicorn, Sara, and running has become something I never expected, our sanctuary. We fit in runs whenever we can, sneaking them into our hectic work schedules, and to my surprise, this rhythm has not only worked for four years but has also become the foundation of our friendship.
Who would have thought that pounding the same few lanes around Standlake, all in the name of building stamina, would bring so much unexpected joy? But that’s the beauty of it and I’ve learned that the unexpected often delivers the most happiness.
In fact, it’s not unlike my journey at The Unicorn. It was through Sara that I joined the Unicorn, a remarkable team of dedicated teachers, TAs, and therapy staff , all of them willing to go the extra mile (quite literally!) and put in the extra time to help students achieve their goals. Just like in running, the spirit at The Unicorn isn’t about medals or being the fastest, it’s about celebrating progress at every level.
When I signed up for that very first Blenheim 7K, I was honestly unsure I could even finish. But I did, and I have, every time since. My race times may not turn heads, but they represent something I’m genuinely proud of. I like to think that’s what we aim for at The Unicorn too: recognising and valuing achievement in all its forms. Understanding that success doesn’t always mean standing on the top podium; often, it’s just about crossing the line with your head held high.
