Cedar Class Fly to Australia

On Friday morning the pupils of Cedar class took a plane flight to Australia, in their imaginations of course!

The activity links to this term's topic of Australia, and was designed to bring to life concepts of geography, intercontinental travel, time zones and cultural differences.  Teacher Mrs Allison recognises the importance of using concrete experiences when learning abstract concepts, today's flight used practical activities to make sense of the relationship between flight times and time zones.

Our Cedar pupils came well prepared for their outing, kitted out in holiday clothes, sunglasses and sunhats, and bringing in in-flight snacks, passports, sleep masks, travel toothbrushes and everything needed for an intercontinental flight.

Starting at London Heathrow, Cedar class tracked their progress on a map as they flew across Europe and Russia, stopping at Hong Kong to enjoy a spot of sunbathing on the roof of a towering skyscraper and an evening stroll along the harbour.  Once in Australia they visited the various sites they had chosen themselves, including the Great Barrier Reef, Sydney Harbour Bridge and Opera House, The Daintree Rainforest and Uluru (formerly Ayers Rock).  On the homeward-bound journey they flew via Kuala Lumpur and arrived back in class in time for afternoon lessons.  We hope they will be over their jet lag by Monday!
